Farm/City Breakfast to feature Kentucky's ag dean

Scott Smith, dean of the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture since 2001, is the guest speaker for the annual Farm/City Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Apollo High School. He will speak on the Kentucky agriculture economy and investments of the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund.

Billed as “the best breakfast in Daviess County,” the menu features bacon, sausage, ham, eggs and more. Its goal is to bring together rural and urban interests, organizers said.

This is the 33rd annual event. It is hosted by the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce and the Daviess County Farm Bureau and sponsored by area farmers and local businesses.

A lot of conversations and networking occur at the breakfast to foster greater understanding of urban and rural issues, said Jimmy Gilles, the Farm Bureau’s Daviess County president.

“It’s a good communication tool for us,” he said. “I think there’s sometimes misunderstandings of the trials we go through as farmers and the commitment necessary for our business. We’re making good business decisions and trying to do what’s best for the environment, for our children’s futures and for everyone’s futures.”

Tickets are $6 and can be purchased at the chamber offices at 200 E. Third Street, at the Farm Bureau office on Carter Road or online at www.owensboro.com/chamber.

Smith has conducted research and taught on soil science, publishing more than 50 research articles about the impact of agricultural practices on soil productivity and environmental quality.
